Sat. Nov. 6th 2010 Albuquerque, New Mexico

Join us as we travel North America in our Holiday Rambler Vacationer, since August 2006
386 miles today
The second day in a row, yesterday was a mistake, but today was planned. Thats a lot more miles than we like to travel in one day, but we are enjoying the places along the way. We left the Flying J in Sayre Oklahoma at 8:00am and arrived at Hidden Valley Campground in Tijeras New Mexico, just outside of Albuquerque at 2:45 p.m. (1:45 local time) We are now in Mountain time. These time zones and time changes are getting us confused because now tonight the time changes again so now my body thinks its 9:00 am (from when we left Ontario) but its really only 6:00 a.m. but we can suffer while if it means finding warmer weather and no snow.
We drove the rest of the way thru Oklahoma, the Texas Panhandle then into New Mexico. There was areas that were so flat and had grain elevators like I remember from the Canadian Prairies, the roads were good and no traffic so it was a breeze. We passed a huge leaning water tower that looks pretty dangerous and numerous signs showing that we were on Historic Route 66 or where it veered off into small towns and villages. One in particular was Shamrock Texas, advertising "as seen in the movies", in particular the "Cars" movie featuring the Conoco tower and the U-Drop Inn.
The endless litter of nonstop Billboards along many stretches make for a few minor distractions that "we just can't miss". One Billboard that we have seen for a few days now was a huge eye catching " Free 72 oz Steak". if you complete the whole meal within one hour, including a baked potato, shrimp cocktail and dinner roll it free. The is available at the Big Texan Steak Ranch in Amarillo Texas. The huge signs and colours flashing as we drove by on I-40, we might have stopped if we were not in the middle of six lanes of traffic.
Continuing the drive we are constantly climbing in elevation and at one point we reached 7,000 ft above sea level and the weather is still pretty nice here. Most of the areas we will be this winter will be very close to sea level. So we set up at 2:45pm but really 1:45pm local time and it sunny and warm so we can sit outside and read for a while, so nice. A bit of a walkabout then supper was finishing off our yummy hamburger casserole and a tossed salad, read a bit more then turn on a tv show to watch me. We will be here two nights.

  1. Finally have internet and caught up on your travels. Love that you got 'detoured', fun! Now i am a bit confused, are you not coming to Mexico at all??? Or just don't know when? Hope to see you here. If you read my blog you will know that the roads are safe. Many are traveling alone and some are staying at a Pemex.
